The volunteer work program at Instituto Hemingway offers a unique opportunity to live and work in Spain as a volunteer. Find out about the culture richness of our country while cooperating with social institutions.
Volunteer work allows you to expand your professional and personal horizons, learn about the Spanish culture close up, improve your level of Spanish and increase your professional and personal capacities by building a network of international friends.
The program is open to any applicant who sincerely wants to have new experiences and meet people from different cultures: Students, graduates, retirees, liberal professionals, etc. Everyone is welcome.
We recommend knowledge of English and at least a basic level of Spanish .
We accept volunteers between 14 and 99 years of age.
The program includes:
- Accommodations in a shared room in an apartment near the school.
- Airport pick-up service.
- Intensive Spanish course for two weeks - 20 hours per week. Level test, books and a certificate upon completion of the program.
- Participation in volunteer work with a maximum of 20 hours per week.
- Equipment and materials for the volunteer work.

The course includes two weeks of intensive Spanish courses, 20 hours per week. If you want more weeks you can request it. It will help you communicate and interact better. The courses are adapted to your level of Spanish from beginner to advanced.
Types of volunteer work...
Participants can choose the area in which they prefer to volunteer.
Possible areas include the care and protection of animals, digital marketing for charitable organizations, football for the integration of young people, social ventures, cleaning beaches, teaching languages to underprivileged groups, art therapy for disabled persons.
Free time activities
During the week, we organize free leisure and cultural activities, such as sports, wine tourism, wine tastings, excursions, visits to tapas bars or to museums. All are free for our volunteers.
On the weekends, students can also enjoy their hobbies, such as hiking, surfing or winery tours. The area is perfect to enjoy outdoor activities.

Reasons to participate

Since many beaches and mountains are not yet adequately protected from an environmental point of view, the support of volunteers is required.
With your volunteer work in this project, you make a significant contribution to the preservation of ecosystems and marine and environmental life. Information, awareness and educational work towards people to take an active role in change and to be more aware of what each of us can contribute so that the environmental impact is one of the significant tasks of this program.
How you can help
The objective of this project is to improve the quality of sea water, collecting kilos of refuse from beaches and/or mountains, protect natural and marine ecosystems, preserve places for surfers, pedestrians and hikers, educate people about pollution and what each of us can do to improve and eradicate pollution with our actions and leave a clean planet for future generations.
Typical day
During the first 2 weeks, you take Spanish courses in the mornings from 09:30 to 13:00. In the afternoons you participate in the volunteer activity doing something significant for the environment, contributing yourself for a better world. This is usually from 14:00 to 18:00. We also offer cultural activities during the week such as excursions, salsa lessons, tapas tours etc and you can join us for free.
Sectors of the beach and mountains are cleaned in specific bags for recycling. It is recommended to bring gloves and specific material including raincoats. You work 20 hours a week maximum and the metro ride is not included (around 10€ per week).
Free-time activities
During weekdays we organise free leisure and cultural activities such as salsa lessons, wine tasting, excursions, tapas tours or visits to museums. All of them are free of charge for our volunteers.
At weekends students can also enjoy their passions such as hiking, surfing or going to a winery. The area is full of potential activities to enjoy beaches and mountains. You can also enjoy the astonishing areas where many of the scenes from Game of Thrones were filmed. As well as the walk of Saint James, which also goes through Bilbao. To sum up, a place where boredom is impossible.

How you can help
Be a part of Disabled Care Volunteering Program to work in a school for mentally challenged students of different age groups ranging from children to adults in their thirties. The students have a variety of learning difficulties and special needs.
Communication in Spanish isn’t an absolute must, what’s important is being able to connect with the students in any way possible. The leaders of the organisation also work in English, so no need to be worried about your language level.
The project is located in an urban area of Bilbao. Working with those people will make you realise how valuable your role can be and the difference you can make in their lives.
Volunteers in this program work as class assistants of different classes supporting the teachers in different activities during the mornings or afternoons. We include indoor games, art & craft activities to help students in their learning process.
There are 2 different shifts to choose from; mornings 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and afternoons 4:00 p.m. To 7:00 p.m.

English Teacher assistant For Kids
Help save animals who are the victims of cruelty and negligence!

How you can help
Volunteers spend their time assisting the local teacher with daily activities, and will spend time teaching and playing with the children.
They will contribute in a number of ways and can expect to undertake the following tasks:
- Help the teacher with the planned classroom activities
- Assist with the delivery of a range of academic subjects
- Converse in and teach basic English to children and teens
- Play games and read to the children in English
- Teach children good life skills
- Help the children and teens complete projects
The Goal
The mission of this program is to help improve the English speaking abilities of disadvantaged children in Bilbao (Northern Spain).
Volunteers will work as Teacher’s Assistants and will generally work Monday - Friday, max 20 hours per week, depending on the needs of the project.
Classes have small numbers of students and generally lack adequate resources so volunteers are needed to help with planning creative lessons and running games and activities, especially with the younger children. With English language skills, these children will have a greater chance of employment, and improved life chances in the wider world. English language skills will also greatly aid youth into higher education.
Volunteers will be placed according to their personal interests, timeframe and profile. This promises to be a wonderful experience for volunteers to learn about the real Spain, spend time with its people and contribute to its future.
Volunteers will contribute in a number of ways and can expect to undertake many of the following tasks:
- Assist the teacher with fun activities and games for the children
- Help to deliver English teaching material on a range of subjects
- Provide conversation practice and help with vocabulary to children and teens
- Play with and read to the children in English
- Help the children and teens complete projects and practice work
A teaching qualification or experience is not compulsory for this placement, your level of experience and confidence will gauge what level of students would best suit and will be discussed between the team and yourself on your first day introduction. The greatest traits of a volunteer are enthusiasm, empathetic and the ability to adjust to alternative cultures. You will get the most out of your trip by opening your mind to new experiences and beliefs whilst also bringing your own to the table.

Animal Welfare
Help save animals who are the victims of cruelty and negligence!

- Volunteer at animal shelters and give your love and care to animals that have been abandoned or abused by their owners and are looking for a new home
Volunteers working at animal shelters will have many different tasks, such as cleaning shelters, feeding animals, walking dogs and cats and assisting in the rehabilitation of traumatised animals. You can also participate in efforts to control stray animal overcrowding during your time at a cat and dog rescue centre. Due to the amount of work it takes to keep the program running, help from volunteers is always greatly appreciated. This is also a great opportunity for volunteers of any age who are passionate about animals and want to spend time volunteering at an animal shelter.
Many families do not have the knowledge of animal welfare, especially in food. This is why it is so important to educate families who would like to have an animal as a family member. Animals are only mediated when the family has the right environment for the cat or dog.
How you can help
Animal welfare volunteers can help out in various ways, including:
Caring for stray dogs and cats (grooming, taking dogs for walks), cleaning cages, administering medications, supporting sterilisation procedures, assisting in rescue operations, distributing food for animals on the street , PR and work, maintaining websites, helping to raise funds, etc.
Before starting your volunteer project, you will receive an orientation from our local staff. The place is run by English and Spanish speakers. They are very happy to welcome volunteers from all over the world. Usually you will be in the program with other volunteers. There are morning and afternoon schedules. Be flexible, that way you will have time to enjoy your afternoon on the beach. This program allows you to rescue and work with abandoned dogs and cats while helping them find a new home.
Typical day
Daily tasks can include:
- Feed and walk the animals
- Cleaning of cages and equipment
- Medication administration and support with sterilisation procedures
- Help with rescue operations where animals are brought from the street
- Food distribution for street animals
- Help with public relations and educational work
- Support in the adoption process
During your free time you can go to the beach. You can enjoy activities like hiking, climbing, trekking, horse riding, relaxing on the beach, etc. Bilbao has excellent surf spots. The water sports activities are closely related to the project.
After the initial orientation, you will have a morning, afternoon or evening shift at your placement and will work for max 4 hours per day. Please note that start times and daily workload depends on the project that you are participating on - some placements run in the afternoon and volunteers on these placements will have the morning free. You may therefore plan daily activities which could include sightseeing, shopping or taking Spanish language lessons.

How you can help
Volunteers will write original articles, edit work, develop strategies on social media and digital trends, update social media and be a true member of the news team as they report on news around the region. Volunteers will find this to be a hugely rewarding program, gaining real life experience in Spain, networking with colleagues and building a resume of work.
Volunteers will contribute in a number of ways and can expect to undertake some of the following tasks:
- Writing articles in English or any other language where they are fluent
- Assist with social media pages and groups on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and Instagram
- Use Multimedia content to connect people emotionally to pressing social, gender and environmental causes
- Developing and maintaining a social media strategy that can help the School secure its leadership in Spain and enhance its visibility
- Take photographs and/or video documentation and report, interview, write and edit content related to our program

We are committed to helping local sports coaches in their daily training with up and coming players, and that is not where we draw the line! We go beyond sports as well to impact other elements of the community, such as students and the immigrant population. You can be a part of this amazing team, working together to make a real difference in the lives of people around us.
During your volunteering, you'll play a crucial role in nurturing the football skills of young athletes. Beyond the pitch, you're welcome to participate in our Community Development Program, where you can combine your passions and create a holistic impact.

Free-time activities
We include free cultural activities Mon-Fri such as climbing, hiking, excursions, day tours, wine tasting etc. These activities are always free for our volunteers.
Volunteers have the weekends free. Spain is universally recognised for its history, art, culture, cuisine and natural beauty, so there is absolutely no shortage of things to see and do while in Bilbao or further afield in Spain!
We include in all our volunteer programs:
- Accommodation shared apartment dorm rooms walking distance to our School (city centre)
- Relevant volunteering equipment
- Free leisure and cultural activities during weekdays
- Supervisor and regular evaluation meetings during your program
- Support 24 hours and 7 days a week from our associated local staff
- Certificate of volunteering at the end as well as the Spanish course with the level achieved
- 2 weeks (20 hours per week) at Centre Accredited by the Cervantes Institute Volunteering 20 hours per week max.
